Grease CostumeJust to get you in the mood I'll give you a quick recap of the Grease movie...

Grease was a 1978 film based on Jim Jacobs' and Warren Casey's musical, Grease.

The film stared , Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway, and Eve Arden.

Newton-John's fame also reached new heights after the movie released.

So here is how the movie went... In 1958, during their summer vacation, (John Travolta) and Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) meet at a beach and begin to fall in love.

Instead of returning to Australia at summer's end, however, Sandy enrolls at Rydell High School as a foreign-exchange student, where Danny is a student. So is Sandy's new friend Frenchy (Didi Conn), a member of the schoolgirl clique "The Pink Ladies".

Danny is the leader of the boys' gang, "The T-Birds". Kenickie, second-in-command of the T-Birds (and Danny's best friend), encourages Danny to tell them about his holiday experiences, while the Pink Ladies likewise persuade Sandy. This results in "Summer Nights."

Encouraged by a preppy school spirit girl, Sandy joins the Rydell cheerleaders. The Pink Ladies decide to reunite Danny and Sandy, but Danny wants to protect his cool image, and his behavior towards Sandy causes her to storm off in tears.

Frenchy attempts to cheer Sandy up by inviting her to a sleepover at her house with the rest of the gang, but Rizzo soon gets fed up with Sandy's goody-two-shoes behavior.

Rizzo lampoons Sandy, singing the sarcastic "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee". When the T-Birds arrive outside Frenchy's house, Rizzo and Kenickie (Jeff Conaway) flirt then leave.

After the party splits up, Sandy decides that she still loves Danny, in spite of everything, and sings "Hopelessly Devoted to You", a poignant love song that was added for the movie and was a big hit as a single. Rizzo's and Kenickie's passionate back-seat love-making is interrupted when the leader of a rival gang, Leo (Dennis Cleveland Stewart) of The Scorpions, and his girlfriend, Cha Cha DiGregorio (Annette Charles), damage Kenickie's car.

Danny meets Sandy at the Frosty Palace, and tries to apologize for his actions. Sandy comes to see if Danny is all right, and they are seemingly reconciled.

Later, Danny takes Sandy to the school's dance, where the TV show National Bandstand plans to broadcast live from the school. When Kenickie asks Cha Cha to the dance, Rizzo retaliates and asks out the rival gang's leader Leo.

During the dance-off, Rizzo leaves in a huff, seeing Kenickie dancing with Cha Cha, and Danny and Sandy are one of the few still in the dance-off. But soon, Sonny pulls Sandy away from Danny, and Cha Cha starts dancing with Danny.

Sandy realizes that Cha Cha was one of Danny's past girlfriends — and a much better dancer. Sandy leaves the gym upset, and Danny and Cha Cha win the contest. Later, Danny takes Sandy to a drive-in movie, apologizes for leaving her, and gives her his class ring. Back in the car, Danny starts trying to make out with Sandy.

Danny laments losing Sandy again, and reveals the true extent of his feelings for her in the song "Sandy" — he is helpless without her.

Because of a mishap before a race in the Los Angeles River, Danny races Leo in of Kenickie's place while Sandy sits on the hill watching. As the T-Birds and Pink Ladies celebrate with Danny, Sandy asks Frenchy's help in winning Danny's heart.

Sandy and Danny fly off in a car and disappear into the sky.

Ok... that's enough about the movie!  How about Grease Costumes for the Halloween holidays?

Here are some Grease Costume ideas for your consideration...

If you ladies are going out together then you can all be pink ladies. You will need a pair or black Capri pants, sandals, and a baby pink satin jacket. Look for pictures of your hair and remember the sunglasses.

Grease is the era of the poodle skirt so get out your sneakers, cardigan, poodle skirt and put your hair up in a ponytail.

This costume is what Sandy wore at the beginning of the movie. Poodle skirts are available at any costume store or you can visit a vintage store and find an authentic skirt, then go through your wardrobe for a tight top and cardigan.

Click Here... Poodle Skirt for a day?

Click Here... Poodle Skirt for a day?

There is also an additional Sandy costume, the costume she wears at the very end.

For an authentic costume you will need very tight . Then find a black off the shoulder t-shirt, black leather jacket, very red lips and big hair.

To really complete this grease costume you do need blond hair and if you are not a blond then a wig is a good option.

A Frenchy costume would include a bright pink wig, ink ladies jacket and a pink dress or skirt with blouse.

A Rizzo costume is similar except your skirt and shirt should be black with a pink ladies jacket. Then you will need short dark hair or a Rizzo wig.

There are several options available for guys looking for grease costumes. Usually the first choice is Danny's Costume. This costume is comprised of a leather jacket, white t-shirt, boots and black pants or black jeans.

Styling your hair can be tricky as you need long enough hair to give it a curl over your forhead.

Men can also go by the 50s jock costume. This is a more clean cut look and you will need some type of high school letter jacket. Then just use the jeans from your closet and a white tee.

Another popular Grease costume for men is Eugene. This is more of a nerdy costume so look for high waist pants, a pocket protector and heavy rimmed glasses.

If you are looking for a fancier Grease costume then chose something from the dance competition. These are all 50s style dresses that feature nipped in waists and larger skirts like poodle skirts.

You can dress up as Cha-Cha, Sandy, Rizzo, Frenchy and any other character at the dance.

Here on my blog It's is possible to buy a complete Grease costume. You can get all the clothing and hair pieces you might need on this page.

You can also find additional pieces for a costume if you already have some parts for your costume. For instance... you can buy a pink ladies jacket, wig, greasers jacket and more.

There are Grease Costumes available for both adults, teenagers and children.

Grease costumes are also very easy for teenagers to make their own costumes as you may be able to find great pieces by looking through your parents or grandparents closet.

Mary asks…

I am going to a dance and have to dress as my favourite rock/pop star from the 50's to now. Any ideas & how?

I am a women age 56 with good legs so I don't mind wearing a short skirt. I am not creative at all so any ideas for an easy costume would be greatly appreciaed.
Thanks

andre1 answers:

It really depends on what you can do with your hair.
You could be Nancy Sinatra with boots and long straight blond hair, Patsy Cline in a litle sequined cowgirl outfit and a boufon hairdo, or Dianna Ross with a 60's style stewardess outfit and 60's hair.
Have fun!

Mark asks…

Help on costumes for a "Then and Now" fashion show!?

I'm in charge of a fashion show at my church. The problem is that I don't know what men and women wore throughout the ages. I need a description on the types of clothing that people wore in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and the 90's. I need it for men and women, and types of accessories that they used would also be very helpful! Thank you so very much :)

andre1 answers:

50's: , old timey high necklines, pin hair curls, high pony tails. Look at the movie Greece if you need a reference point.

60's: Tye Dye, peace-d out clothing, bell bottoms, headbands, circle glasses, face paint (for protestors)

70's: These times were more a transitional time between the 60's & 80's, I'd look online for this one because I'm not sure, sorry.

80's: Think Madonna here. Colored leggings, slouchy one shoulder tops, bangles, a lot of things that have come back "in" today were also in style during the 80's. Hair was ridiculous though, really big, & perms were very in.

90's: Hard for me to describe, so here's a link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990s_in_fashion

Good luck, I hope I helped! =)

Daniel asks…

Ideas please! :) For sexy 50's movie star style, party?

Hi everyone,

Ok so Im celebrating my birthday soon, it's my 18th so I want it be really special :)

I am looking to go with a themed party, I want it fun and sexy :) The kind of idea I want is... well it's hard to explain really.... you know the women from the 20's and 30's? That kind of movie star sexiness they had? I want it like that :)

I am quite full figured, so I think I would look great in say a fitted dress with some cleavage, or fitted black shirt and pencil skirt, with killer , red lipstick. There will be jazz music and the men will be in black suits.

So, if anyone knows of anyone plus-size online stores what will do these kind of costumes, or dresses, that are beautiful, sexy and elegant, and also available to me in the UK, let me know! :)

How many mid-age people have trouble w/friends (who are your own mid-age peers) telling you look "so old"?!?

I accept myself for who I am. I'm not the 25,35,45 yr old I was - I'm now in my 50's. I worked in entertainment in my younger yrs & had above avg appearance. Now, I'm an avg 50 something person w/no facelift & fatter than I was by about 30 lbs. I have had "old friends" tell me that I've "really gone downhill," "better lose weight," "you're not the person I remember," and "What Happened?" I have heard worse things get back to me about things said behind my back.

Yes, I used to be young, beautiful, better off financially, and more ready & able to entertain & take care of everyone, I moved on. I am now 50 something, sagging to some extent, slightly overweight (a woman's size 12), & Ok w/it.

I have sold many of my old costumes & retired from entertainment. They ask me "Why . . . are you depressed?!?" I say, "No, none of those fit anymore, I'll never use them & I have a new career." Still, I get frowns, grimaces, head-shaking, & now they no longer want to talk to me.

andre1 answers:

If your friends are truly saying that...UGH!! Some friends!!

But no, sorry. think I am actually in my 30's and I am 44. And guess what? I haven't had any surgery, either.

Though I can't imagine that makes you feel very good. I guess if you were like a stripper or something....the mindset of your 'peers' might still be in that venue, but I would say...as long as you are happy about yourself then who cares what they say? .

Drop your friends. That'll make you at least 300lbs lighter, right there!!

Grease style clothes for a play?

hey,
i go to acting classes and we are going to have our show in about 2 weeks and i need grease style clothes...
sadly, i am on a very low budget (almost nothing, cause i don't wanna ask my parents for money. again.) and i am not sure if i have the right clothes..they told us to have a colorful skirt, matching stretchy pants, shirt that goes well with these colors, a large matching belt and black ballet shoes..our hair is gonna be up in a ponytail and tied with a ribbon..

i have a skirt with two layers: one longer and one shorter so that you can see both..both layers are turquoise and brown and have brown lace on the edge..i also have black ballet shoes..i think these would be perfect for the 50s theme, but i need matching stuff..

any suggestions on what i should wear?? maybe i could find those stuff in my closet..or i might even try to make something :)

thanks in advance :)
i am from hungary so sadly no goodwill or here :(

Anyone truly know about greaser girls clothing style?

Okay so obviously the female greasers/rockabillies/drapes wore red lipstick, cat-eye liner, pin curls, and tight black tops BUT does anyone know if they wore black spandex pants or black leather pants? i know Olivia Newton John wore spandex at the end of Grease but when I looked it up, spandex wasnt invented till 1959 so did the tough gals wear spandex or leather, and if they wore something other, what was it? how did they get it to be so form fitting?

What are good themes for elementary dances?

I am in charge of coming up with a theme for our kindegarden and 1st grade mommy-son dance. Last year we did 70s and each kid took home a tie dyed shirt. The year before they dressed western and ate BBQ and got a hat. I need a fresh idea that is relatively easy for parents to dress as, and inexpensive to put on. We have very limited time as a parent backed out and I took over at the last minute. 3 weeks!! We have a DJ, and we have food. I need decoration/costume ideas that young kids will be familiar with and adults will enjoy. Some ideas we have thrown around so far are:

pirates
superheroes
50's sock hop (i.e. Grease)
prehistoric (cavemen)

any thoughts or comments or other themes?
thanks

andre1 answers:

Hey, Theme dances are always a good time, I used to work at a summer camp for 5 years and we had at least one every session. Of the themes you listed I would go with ether the pirates or super heros. Sock hops just aren't fun for kids these days, they don't get them. Pre-historic could be fun, but you wont get very inventive costumes really. With Pirates or super heros, you can really get imaginative with a costume while keeping appropriate. Some themes that worked well for me that I have used have been beach party themes, Colorful theme (have them dress in their favorite/s colors and you can have odd colored food and such), and another popular one is like a movie theme, where you dress like your favorite actor or actress. That last one might not be great for the age group but its somthing to think about. Those are my thoughts on it, but from your list deffinatly pirtates or superheros.

Can I substitute off-brand for Cheez Whiz for ?

I'm totally serious. Basically, I've seen that Cheez Whiz works in taking out grease stains in clothes. I found some store brand "party cheese" in a can (I know: GROSS!) and I was wondering whether that would work?

andre1 answers:

Well, if you're serious, no...I would not use Cheez Whiz. Sounds like an Urban Legend to me. (Maybe one for Mythbusters?)

To remove grease stains from clothing, pretreat with dish washing liquid. recommend Dawn, but any good brand is fine...Ajax, Palmolive, etc.

Rub the dish washing liquid into the stains. Allow to sit 20 to 30 minutes. Then launder as usual.

Dish washing liquid is specially formulated to break down grease. It will break down the stain, and your washer will wash it away.

Ruth asks…

How do you get oil/grease out of clothes fast?

I was riding my bike one day with my hoodie around my waist and the hoodie got caught in my tire and there was oil all over it or whatever you call it. Black was all over :( My mom put it in the laundry and some of it washed off. But I need it for tomorrow and I'm trying to get the rest off! I can't go to the store so is there anything easy i could use?

andre1 answers:

I would recommend trying these things:

1) If your mom has Dawn dish detergent (without bleach, if your hoodie is not white), you can rub that into the stains.

2) Wash in a good laundry detergent and water as hot as the fabric will stand. (Read the care label on your hoodie to see what wash temp is recommended.)

3) Add white vinegar to the wash water, if you have some in the house -- at least 1/2 cup.

4) Do NOT put in the dryer until the stains are all gone.

Hope this helps!

Grease Costumes????????????

Is there anywhere I can get good quality Grease costumes, my school is doing the show in a couple of months and I am trying to get costumes together( I dont really want bad halloween costumes)
Thanks in advance =)

andre1 answers:

I agree, no bad . You also shouldn't have everyone in poodle skirts. Contrary to popular believe not everyone wore poodle skirts in the 50s. It was just a fad.

There's a few different options for the girls.

1. Rent costumes: Many theatre companies rent out their costumes. They would have some good quality ones. Sometimes they'll give you a good deal in exchange for advertising in your show's program.

2. Vintage Stores: If you have any good vintage thrift stores in your area, they might have some really cute stuff actually from the 50s. Don't go looking for 50s skirts or dresses at thrift department stores like Savers or Goodwill, though. They won't have them. Look for a vintage boutique sort of place.

3. Make Costumes: Circle skirts (what they wore in the 50s) are really easy to make. You don't even need a pattern. You pretty much just cut out a huge circle out of the fabric, then cut out a circle from the middle of it for the waist. Then sew it into a waist band.

4. Use clothes people may already have: You can pair the skirts with button down blouses and cardigans. These you can just get at Savers or Goodwill, or cast members might have some of these. Also, some girls can wear capris: in the 50s, it was in style to wear them rolled up to the knee.

The guys are super easy. They just need tighter fitting jeans, plain T-shirts, and . The Burger Palace Boys (or T-Birds) logo can be painted on.

For the jackets, you could make them, or an easier thing to do would be to buy pink jackets and then paint (or T-shirt transfer) the Pink Ladies logo on. When I worked on Grease in high school, we made them, but when I designed a production of it more recently, I found some hot pink jackets on Amazon that were on clearance for only like $7 each. Then I used a T-shirt transfer to put a logo I made onto the back of the jackets.

So, yeah...if you have any questions about characters or anything, feel free to ask me. I'm a professional costume designer, and I've done costumes for Grease twice.

Sandra asks…

Is my style "bad" like he says?

okay, so i have a very unique style. i like more vintage clothes. you could say greaser, punk, sophisticated, edgy victorian is more my style. i really like urban outfitters too if you know what their style looks like. and i'm always getting compliments on my style and my clothes when i'm at school or when i'm walking around. people will just come up to me and tell me they like what i'm wearing or what my hair looks like. and i have good taste (not to sound conceited), i know what looks good, what works and what doesnt.

so lately i've been on a plaid rage. i love my combat boots (doc martens, whoo!) and my tights. and today i went to buy some aviator sunglasses when my older brother (whom i really look up to) started asking me if i like this or that....just random things. and i didnt. so he went on about how basically ugly my style is and that if he could dress me himself, he would. he said my doc martens looked like moon boots (which they dont) and how ugly tights and plaid is...
also, i think he may be a bit biased towards the whole punk, tough look....he starts saying how ugly it is whenever he sees it or hears about it.

i wear such different clothes though...its not always one look. oh and he even said i should be on the show "what not to wear" as a joke. that was NOT funny...i'm just guessing he wants me to dress like HE wants me to dress...what is his problem??

andre1 answers:

I want your style, thats what I'm going for. My guess is, since he is your brother, even though he asked you for your opinion he probably felt like you were dissing him so he felt the need to diss your style back, he probably doesn't realize how much it means/hurts you, I'm not gonna say "you should tell him this hurts your feelings" because personally I hate that advice and don't think it gets anywhere. So rather than caring, don't care about his opinion on YOUR style, it's yours not his, you look up to him for other things not clothes :) .

OR, next time he asks you for your opinion be open minded, not for clothes you like, (say if he were to pick out a Hollister shirt and try it on) critisize him on what looks good on him and what doesn't.

, and keep on with your style :)

Rent the movie and you'll get ideas. Back then some girls used to wear what they called "." They were long poofy skirts that went, in some cases, to their ankles, and they had a big poodle dog sewn on them. That would definitely conceal your knee brace.

Grease/50's style clothing?

My choir is preforming songs from Grease and is supposed to wear 50's or Grease inspired clothing. I'm having a hard time finding something. I was just going to wear some capris that flare slightly out and a white shirt with a scarf tied at the side... People are really getting involved and I really want an awesome costume. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to wear or how to make something on a low budget. Any ideas going along with the theame are greatly appreciated. Thank you,
Jer

andre1 answers:

Okay... You should wear a long skirt, and then wear a cute t-shirt with a matching scarf (matches the skirt)... And wear those glasses that curve up at the ends.... Plus get some beaded string and hook it onto the glasses for the old fashoned glasses holder!

Sandra asks…

andre1 answers:

Shoes: either white converse alstar low-tops or plain black pumps.
Socks: Bobbie socks
Hair: either in a pony tail tied with a pink scarf or down held back with scarf
Jewelry: A big mens class ring held by a chain around the neck. Maybe also a broach pinned to the top a cat would fit the era.
Tops: either a white t shirt with a button down shirt over it, or the shirt buttoned but hanging out. A tight (clingy) plain cashmere sweater would do OK too (especially with the pumps)
Bottoms: Tight Levis pegged at the ankle or a knee length tight skirt.
Makeup: You want the lips red the cheeks pink, I'm not sure on the rest, but a little slutty would be good for the greaser look.
Have fun!!!

i mean like the rebelish
i mean like the rebelish

andre1 answers:

I am not sure if you mean the good kind of girls or the rebelish ones.
I know the "good girls" wore poodle skirts or regular skirts, a petti coat under, a tight-ish blouse tucked into their skirts, a wide belt, a little jacket, cute bobbi sox and saddle shoes or tight capris.

"rebelish" girls wore tight capris, or pencil shaped skirts with blouses and belts. Makeup was usually a red lip and black eye shadow.

Susan asks…

Cheer team outfit theme?

Okay, so, in june my cheer team is going to camp. there is a day (the last day there) when we get to dress up in a "fun day" outfit. the team has a theme and we all organize something to wear. we have to match, so we cant just buy anything. oh, and it has to be something we can wear all day and cheer in. like, we have to be able t stunt and tumble in the outfit. there are 1 of us, and we can't be ballerinas, or grease themed, those are already taken. thankss!!
sorry, that 1 is supposed to be a 16.
i was sort of thinking like, fairytale characters, like dorthy, cinderella, , etc, but i have no idea how to out together outfits for a whole cheer team. plus, we'd have to (like i said) be able to do everything in them. help!!
and uhm, how would we do superheroes??
i see that everyone is putting that, so.
ideas, please??
thanksss!
