Nancy asks…

i need help removing stains from the !?

i live in an apartment building with shared laundry facilities. once in a while my clothes come out stained from what i believe to be something left behind by someone else... it looks like grease or but there was nothing on my clothes like that in the first place... does anyone have experience removing stains that happen while you wash? this is getting incredibly frustrating!
the shirt in particular is a bold green, i need to make sure whatever i use won't ruin the shirt too... advice is much appreciated
since it is a public washing machine i don't have much say in how often and how its cleaned... thanks for the info but i'm more concerned about my clothes :)

andre1 answers:

Try using Oxi-clean with your detergent in every wash. Bring a wet rag next time and run it around the inside of the washer before you use it. It is very frustrating to get stains like that on your clothes. There is no way of knowing what someone washed before you and they can leave all kinds of stuff behind that can ruin your clothes. .

Richard asks…

I have a huge laundry issue, i always separate my clothes into colours but they always get ruined?

this only happens when i wash my white clothes, when they go in they do not have stains on them. But when they come out they come out with black spots or like grease spots but it is not grease. Is it possible it could be from the washing machine. I always ruin my husbands clothes, and i really wish i could be a pro at cleaning them. PLEASE HELP also what is the best stain remover to use??? Is bio shout could to use??? do bounce sheets work for putting them in the drawers to make clothes smell nice and fresh, Please help me as when i wash clothes it is a disaster. I always separate them.

andre1 answers:

First clean the inside of your machine. Use white vinegar and water, wipe the inside entirely.
When you wash the clothes add a 1/4 cup of vinegar to wash cycle. Remove clothes from washer immediately and dry. Those spots are dirt or mildew from the wet clothes sitting in the washer for too long.

Joseph asks…

Is there anything that's good for taking food grease marks out of clothing?

I dropped a chip on my favourite shorts last night so to try and clean them I put Fairy liquid on them and put them straight in the washing machine but now they've dried I can see the mark's still there =(
Is there anything else that could take the mark out?
Thanks x

andre1 answers:

A Vanish Soap Bar will do the trick - it really does work!'
Wet the stain and rub the soap on the stain - make sure it's well worked in. Some stains like curry will start to disappear or change colour on contact. Wait for 5 to 10 mins and then wash as normal in your washing machine. Occasionally, for stubborn stains, you may have to repeat the process.

I've used it for years - it seems to work for every kind of stain.

Robert asks…

does anyone have a solution 2 keep gas grills from flame up when grease drips down from ur food u r grilling?

i use 2 put cover the grill rack with foil on my charcoal grill but im not so sure if that will work with a gas grill 2 b n the front page news online n stupid video or you tube (smile)
so please help me ...world wide web

andre1 answers:

Be careful what you wish for. It is those puffs of smoke and flame that add the "grilled' flavor to what you're cooking. Otherwise you might as well be cooking in a frying pan on the stove top in the kitchen.

But there are limits to acceptable flare-ups. I have a bad memory of a picnic when I was a youngster where the featured item on the grill was to be duck. The duck released tremendous amounts of grease and the flames shot up high. Taking the duck away and slamming down the lid was the only prudent thing to do. There was so much excitement from trying to keep the fire under control that the host, an older man, developed chest pains and we had to summon an ambulance. His wife finished cooking the duck in the oven in the kitchen. Even there, the thing to do is to put a large pan of water under the rack to catch the drippings.

But back to your question: Most gas grills have lava rocks or something to catch the drippings and let them flare up to give the food that grilled flavor. The grills I've seen let moderate amounts of excess grease run through to the bottom and have a bracket with a collecting can to catch the drippings where they run out of a hole in the bottom of the grill. If you're grilling a fatty steak, you can trim some (but not all) of the fat off before you cook it. For the case of a duck, use the rotissarie and put a pan of water underneath it to catch most of the drippings before they hit the gas flames lest your picnic become overly exciting.

Remember, one advantage the gas grill has over charcoal is you can always turn the flame down with a simple twist of the knobs on the gas grill. Judging the right heat level to cook the food is part of the art of grilling. If the grill has multiple burners, you might be better off leaving off the burner directly under the duck, for example, and using indirect heat to do the cooking. For a well trimmed steak, my opinion is you want direct high heat to nicely sear the outside while still leaving the inside a bit pink and juicy.

How do i get grease off my 87 ford ranger 2.9L flywheel?

I just replaced the clutch in my 87 Ford Ranger and i think i got some high temp grease on the fly wheel because it is slipping. Is there a way i can get the grease off without haveing to pull the tranny back out?

andre1 answers:

You can try to shoot brake cleaner down in to it if you have an inspection hole. Other wise no you have to pull the tranny.

Robert asks…

How do you clean 2 years worth of grease and food chunks out of your Gas BBQ?

I have not cleaned my BBQ since I got it and now the burners don't lite properly and the crap inside catches fire and burns my food and also makes it taste funny. I'm sure I can hose it off but I was wondering if there is a special technic involved.

andre1 answers:

What I do is put plastic grocery sacks over my hands like gloves, and scrape the crud out....try to get the burners clear...if you have a dog, keep it clear too, as they like to eat the stuff and it is no good for them.

Turn the burners on high, put the lid down and leave it for 1/2 hour or so.

When it has cooled down, repeat step 1...you should have burned a lot of the crud off, so will make it easier to finish up

Rub Dawn Dish Detergent into the stain. Wash in .

Paul asks…

Does anyone know how to take out grease stains from clothes?

andre1 answers:

Dawn dish washing soap works great - soak it in the hottest water possible for the clothing, and add right at 5 tbl spoons of dish soap to 1 gallon of water. Let is soak for at least 2 hours, then wash it... No need to ring or rinse it.

The brown paper bag works very well with candle wax on carpet, rather than oil on clothing.

Laura asks…

how do i get a lot of grease out of my hubby's clothes?

my hubby works as a fry cook. he comes home with his clothes saturated in oil and grease. i mean a lot. what can i use that's safe in the washer to get it all out?

andre1 answers:

Use a dish liquid before or during the wash. I have run out of laundry soap on occasion, and have used dish liquid; It works wonderfully. The grease cutting power of dish liquid doesn't have to just be used on dishes. You can either use dish liquid and hand wash the clothes in your bathtub or sink, then put them in the washer, or you can simply put some dish liquid in the wash where you would usually use laundry soap. Either way, make sure to use hot water, because it increases the effectiveness of the dish liquid.

Transmission oil leaked and got on my clothes, how do I get my whites white again?

Long story short, the transmission is starting to go bad in my washer. Every few loads, it shoots out oil/grease and it gets on the clothes. I got it out of most of my colors by using Zout, but the whites don't want to cooperate. These are our work shirts and my kids school clothes so they need to look good. What can I do to get my whites back to being white? Any and all help is much appreciated! :-)

andre1 answers:

The problem is by the time you get them white a shot of transmission (?) fluid will zap them again. Is there any way you can clean those shirts by spraying the stains with a and let them sit and then hand wash them and drip dry them on a plastic pipe above your bathroom tub? They should dry in less than 24 hours (and won't set the stain) and you MUST have a fan going in there so nothing molds.

Just Tide in good clean water usually removes any stains my clothes get.

andre1 answers:

Zep 505 commercial cleaner/degreaser sold at Home Depot does works the best and it won't harm you. When this first happens run ice cube or cold water on the stain never, never use warm or hot it would just bond the stain to the clothes. If this happen already there is nothing you can do. With the Zep just run it in and you can wash out the stain right there. I also pour this stuff into the wash since it destories the dirt, oil an etc. It comes in contact with. Still leaves a nice smell.

Tide, All, Wisk, Cheer, Dawn, these work for minor dirt stains not for oil. Oil comes in this way cooking oil or motor oil. I use Zep on both types of oil, it can get rid of them quick. It's not magic, but it does work.

Unlike simple green which is green Zep 505 is clear. Zep makes a clone of simple green I use to use that 100% then stumble across Zep 505 formula..

Nancy asks…

how do you remove baked on grease from a cast iron skillet, and what is the best way to maintain?

andre1 answers:

Here's How:
1. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection while cleaning cast iron since the methods require using caustic chemicals.

2. Begin by spraying the pan with oven cleaner and putting it in a plastic bag.

3. After a day or two, take it out of the bag and scrub it down with a brass brush.

4. If all the grease doesn't loosen up right away, repeat the process concentrating cleaner on stubborn spots.

5. If you have several dirty items, soak them in a solution of one and a half gallons of water to one can of lye mixed in a plastic container.

6. Allow them to soak for about five days, then remove the pieces and use brass brush method to scrub them clean.

7. Removing mild rust should be done with a fine wire wheel on an electric drill.

8. Crusted rust can be dissolved by soaking the piece in a 50 percent solution of white vinegar and water for a few hours.

9. Once the pan's clean, begin the seasoning process by warming it in the oven for a few minutes then applying a little shortenting, vegetable cooking spray, lard or bacon fat.

10. Put the skillet back into a 225 degree oven for . Remove and wipe it almost dry to eliminate any pooled grease.

11. Place the pan in the oven for another half hour or so, completing the initial seasoning.

12. The seasoning process will continue with use, especially if you use it to cook fatty foods (bacon, sausage, fried foods, etc.) the first few times it hits the stove.

13. To clean after cooking, boil hot water in the pan. Let it soak for several minutes and then wipe dry with a paper towel.

14. Reheat the pan and apply just enough grease to wet the surface before storing.

Tips:
Use the methods above only for cleaning iron.
Don't soak pans in a vinegar solution more than overnight without checking them because the solution will eventually eat the iron.
After cooking, do not use detergent or scouring pads to clean a cast iron pan since this will destroy the seasoning.
What You Need:
Rubber gloves
Eye protection
Spray oven cleaner
Large plastic zip bag
Brass brush

John asks…

If the oil goes all the way to New Jersey, will the cast of Jersey Shore use the oil to grease their hair?

I'm just wondering. With a catastrophe as devastatting as this, you have to try to have a sense of humor to lighten the atmosphere.

andre1 answers:

They may not use it for their hair...lubrication maybe?

Sandy asks…

Can I season a new cast iron pan with butter instead of or lard?

andre1 answers:

I am a former chef and the 2 people who said oil are correct, and thing else will burn, leave a film not cure the pan and go rancid overtime, place the pan in a 400 D F oven clean "no oil", let it heat for 30 minutes, take it out, let it sit for 10 minutes, then rub the pan with a oiled paper towel or old cloth, and put it back in for 15 minutes, and then turn off the oven, and leave it in until cooled down, or the smoke alarm will go off, then rub it again with the cloth or towel, and wipe it out with a dry one, the pan is cured and ready for cooking.

Now it is cured, you can not wash it, EVER!!!, just wipe it out with a damp cloth, no scrubbers or SOS pads or you will have do the whole curing process over again, ever time you use it, it will build up more protection, and when you give it in 30 years to your daughter it will be working until she passes it on to her own child.

Sandra asks…

Anyone have a tried and true method of removing grease stains?

I have had so many clothes ruined by grease stains! I don't have enough money to buy new ones anymore.
So for example, I have this shirt. I was cooking while wearing it, and it got vegetable oil splattered on it. I took it off immediately and dabbed it with water. The next day I sprayed it with some kind of stain spray with Resolve, let it sit, then washed it. (I have also tried Shout, Club Soda, and pre treating stains with the .) Anyway the stain remained, and now it's dried in and totally set. I wore the shirt once.
Moral of the story: I AM SO FRUSTRATED. Does anyone have some secret, magical way to get grease stains out?

andre1 answers:

The best cleaner for grease stains is Dawn dishwashing soap. It has a degreaser in it. Get the spot wet, pour some dishsoap on it. Agitate it into the spot with your finernails or a toothbrush. Let set for like 10 minutes and then wash as normal

When I went to the store last week, I decided to buy Spray n Wash instead, since it was a bit cheaper. I haven't tried it yet, but I was wondering if anyone else has? Can anyone (!!!!!!!) let me know how to get rid of from clothes that have been washed?

I have tried Vanish etc but the grease spots (from cooking) is still in the material!! HELP

andre1 answers:

It will be difficult especially when it has been dried.

Try this:

Get Grease Lightning
and spray on spots.
Let it soak for several minutes and then rub with Dawn and hot water.

Let it soak again, and then rinse.

Air dry/line dry, (do not put in the dryer) and see if it is gone.

You may need to do this several times until it comes out.

Grease Lightning has gotten many of our stains out even when it has been dried in.

Your Questions About Grease 2

February 29, 2012

Mark asks…

how to find and sew black trim onto jacket from ?

I am making my own pink ladies jacket and i have little experience in sewing, but i want to know how to add the black trim from the grease 2 movie. here is a link to the pic. http://www.pfeiffertheface.com/wp-images/2009/01/1982_g2_p01.jpg any ideas?

andre1 answers:

That looks like piping... It's sewn in as the seam is sewn.

If you're trying to add it to a finished jacket, you can somewhat fake it by sewing soutache braid over the seamlines. Here's how to do it with a couching foot, gimping foot or cording foot:

http://www.singerco.com/pdf/CordingSewingMC.pdf

http://www.sewingmachine-sales.co.uk/sewing_machine_info/video/39/couching/braiding

Probably not the best project for a beginner, as any little wobbles will really show up because of the high contrast between the black and the pink. Might want to get some experienced help for that part, or else do a fair amount of practice ahead of the actual project.

Chapstick in dryer--stains on clothes?

Hi. I accidentally washed my clothes with Chapstick in one of the pockets, and then it went into the dryer, so now all my clothes from that load have tiny grease/oil stains all over them. Is there anyway I can clean all these at once without having to spot-treat each individual spot? It's a dark load, so bleach won't work. Thanks!
Do you think washing the load with Zout would work? Or how about spot treating them (ugh) and using Dryel? I really don't want to have to pay the dry cleaners. It's like 20 pieces of clothing!

Actually, I add a small amount occasionally to my regular loads to brighten the color (do not mix with chlorine beach), and use it to wash my bathroom linens...it makes the towels fluffier and more absorbent.
